I know, I know, I thought Prom Nights From Hell was bad, so why read this? I thought I'd test it out, see if a different book was better. But this, like PNFH, was filled with underdeveloped stories that never got over 2 stars. The only good thing is the author of Toilet wasn't in it.



"Sleeping With The Spirit" by Laurie Faria Stolarz

I liked the original premise of the story: Girl is haunted by ghost in her dreams that will stop at nothing to get help from her because she can talk to the dead. However, it quickly becomes an insta-love story, forgetting the great plot premise. I was disappointed to say the very least. Even the little sister sub plot was boring.

"Stupid Perfect World" by Scott Westerfield

What was this shit? Almost nothing was explained, the science unbelievable, and the characters, like all of them in the book, never given any characterization. But hey, I kind of expected this out of Westerfield.

"Thinner Than Water" by Justine Larbalastier

Again, little was explained, especially about why the police didn't remove the kids from most of the parents in the town. Really, nothing "WTF" story of the book.

This book made me think of Evermore for obvious reasons. Again, no explanations on anything, just a story that made no fucking sense.

This really makes me wonder what passes as YA lit today. Can it have at least a little quality? These stories were so bad I can't even find GIFS to explain them with, which is just sad.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher Review

Teen  suicide  is  a  real  issue.  I've  read  stats:  Teens  who  were  abused  usually  kill  themselves  more  than  teens  who  weren't  abused.  More  GLBT  teens  kill  themselves  before  their  straight  teen  counterparts  do.  Teens  who  are  bullied  usually  kill  themselves  before  teens  who  don't.  There  are  usually  more  reasons,  but  those  are  some  good  pointers.  Now  how  was  this  book  relevant  to  suicide?  I'll  sum  it  up  with  this  and  say  that  this  song  is  more  relevant  to  teen  suicide  than  this  book:

Yeah.  A  note  on  that:  Elton  wasn't  serious  on  killing  himself.  He's  not  serious  on  any  teen,  or  anyone  killing  themselves.  This,  however,  understands  teen  suicide  better  than  this  book.

Why  did  Hannah  kill  herself?  She  had  pretty  weak  reasons.  The  only  I  could  understand  was  she  was  mildly  sexually  harassed.  She  could  have  easily  stopped  it  by  going  to  the  principal.  I  know  it  might  be  embarrassing  or  even  feel  shameful  to  report  that  someone  said  she  had  a  cute  butt  (*cough,  cough,  hot  ass*,  I'm  picturing  the  George  Michael  butt  slap  from  the  80's).  But  even  I  can't  see  that  as  why  someone  would  kill  herself  unless  it  was  constant  or  she'd  been  sexually  abused.  She  also  had  a  Peeping Tom,  and  the  she  invited  someone  over  so  they  could  "marvel"  at  how  great  it  was.  Here's  what  this  book  is  saying:  "Don't  call  the  police on  those  bastards."  If  she  felt  too  afraid  to  call  the  police  why  did  she  bring  over  a  sort  of  friend?  What  the  hell!  That  was  maybe  the  strongest  point  she  had  and  that  was  it. 

Hannah  Baker  really  was  weak  on  why  she  killed  herself.  She  wasn't  constantly  bullied  and  it  seemed  like she  made  the  tapes  to  blame  people.  They  may  have  done  a  bad  thing  or  two  to  her  but  saying  they  "made"  her  kill  herself  is  a  false  statement.  It  is  your  choice  to  kill  yourself;  people  only  influence  you  on  this.  

What  if  Hannah  Baker  had  been  abused?  What  if  she'd  been  neglected?  What  if  she'd  had  some  handicap?  What  if  she'd  been  a  lesbian?  What  if  she  was  trans?  What  if  she  was  bullied?  Poor?  Had  depression?  Grieving?  Cutting  herself?  No,  Asher  gave  her  weak  reasons  and  a  pity  party  and  them  she  killed  herself.  Blah.

Girls  in   this book  are  all  snotty  brats,  Hannah  being  one  the  most.  Men  are  all  chauvinist  pigs  who  just  want  sex  (lots  of  guys  don't  just  want  sex,  they  want  to  be  understood  by  others).  But  Clay,  of  great  flat  character  Clay  with  no  personality  whatsoever,  is  the  good  guy!  He  isn't  horny!  He's  nice!  Hannah  had  a  crush  on  him!  But  he  never  dated  her!  It  should  be  Clay's  fault!

So  flat  characters  with  constantly  changing  voices  between  Clay  and  Hannah,  we  get  this  weakly  written  book  that  doesn't  seem  relevant  to  teen  suicide.  I  felt  no  sympathy  for  Hannah,  I  didn't  like  Clay,  and  everyone  else  sucked,  too.  Asher  wrote  a  story  that  had  so  much potential  but  instead  wrote  about  a  girl  who  didn't  even  have  depression  or  a  disease  to  make  me  feel  she  was relevantly  suicidal.  She  just  was.  Now  all  those  thirteen  people  will  be  traumatized  for  life  by  a  snotty  girl  who  wants  to  blame  them  for  all  her  problems.

I  wish  I  could  blame  all  my  problems  by  a  rush  of  blood  to  the  head.  But  that's  not  a  good  enough  reason.  In  a  way  I  want  to  buy  a  gun  and  start  a  war,  but  I  really  have  nothing  to  fight  for.  War  is  just  a  bad  thing  and  I  don't  want  to  cause  it.  It  would  never  be  worth  it.

Hannah  Baker  did  all  those  things.  Asher  wrote  her  problems  to  support  her  suicide  but  could  barely  think  of  anything  good.  Why  didn't  Dave  Pelzer  kill  himself?  I've  always  wondered  this.  He's  now  an  anti-child  abuse  supporter.  But  what  he  went  through,  how  did  he  let  himself  live  through  that?  I  wouldn't  be  surprised  if  a  kid  living  through  something  like  him  did  kill  themselves.  Asher  over  glorified  suicide  with  an  attention  hog  teen  and  tried  to  look  relevant.  He  failed  so  bad.  I  hope  no  one  who  really  is  suicidal  reads  this  trash.  I  used  to  be  suicidal,  too.  I  can  understand  why  so  many  people  kill  themselves,  but  never  Hannah  Baker.  And  I  don't  support  suicide.

Nightshade by Andrea Cremer Review

Fuck  patriarchy.  Just  plain  fuck  it;  I  need  that  hammer!  I  would  smash  it  until  the  pieces  were  nothing.  This  book  has  lots  of  patriarchy  in  it;  you  better  prepare  for  my  rant.  My  bitch  powers  are  on  high!  As  Elton  John  said:  The  bitch  is  back  (and  in  full  swing).

In  the  beginning  Calla  is  a  sex  toy;  it's  what  her  mother  is  making  her  become  to  make  Ren  want  to  fuck  her  (I'm  serious).  Calla  has  never  been  allowed  to  date  or  make  out  or  do  any horny  teenage  shit  because  of  her arranged  marriage  with  a  bastard  who  has  balls  for  brains  named  Ren.  Ren  is  a  chauvinist  pig  who  happily  fucks  cheerleaders  (and  I'm  fine  with  guys  having  consensual  sex  with  cheerleaders),  ignoring  Calla.  Thus  Calla  has  to  wear  a  short  skirt  to  be  noticed.  by  him.  I  felt  nothing  at  all  between  them.  Then  she  meets  Shay  and  it's  insta-love  (sick).  Shay  "changes"  her.  And  her  "love"  with  him  is  forbidden  and  evil  and  sick  and  blah,  blah,  blah.  And  Shay  holds  some  extremely  predictable  secrets.

My  problems  with  this  book:

1.  "Purity".  Virginity  is  not  real!  It's  true  people;  your  hymen  is  just  this  ugly  little  thing  a  bike  can  break!  I  was  sickened  at  how  deeply  imbedded  purity  was  in  this  book.  Anyone  who  doesn't  fit  into  it  is  a  slut.  Honestly  it  was  so  insane  I'm  wondering  why  Calla  was  allowed  to  run  or  do  other  exercise  but  that  can break  your  hymen  and  lose  your  "purity".  Was  she  allowed  to  ride  a  bike  as  a  kid?  It  was  so  insane  I  was  wondering  that.  You  know  in  that  one  episode  of  season  four  of  The Big  Bang  Theory?  It  was  when  Howard  and  Bernadette  were  having  their  first  date  and  began  to  talk  about  their  overbearing  mothers  and  Bernadette  said  something  along  the  lines  of  "My  mother  wouldn't  let  me  ride  a  bicycle  because  she  was  afraid  I'd  hit  a  bump  and  lose  my  virginity."  I  really  suspect  something  like  that  happened  to  Calla.  And  what  about  rape?  I  seriously  wondered  why  she  wasn't  given  an  abstinence  belt.  OK,  maybe  that  wouldn't  have  stopped  a  bike  (I  consent  to  sex with  my  bike,  but  I'm  such  a  slut  I  don't  put  on  rubbers  when  we  "bump"),  but  a  guy  or  girl  it  probably  would.  It  also  would  have  prevented  masturbation,  which  probably  would  have  been  evil,  too.  And  Calla  really  seemed  to  have  a  dire  need  to  fuck,  seriously. She  either  needed  hormone  pills  or  a  long,  long  real-life  porno  where  she  is  the  star.

And  she  was  arranged  to  marry  Ren  for  breeding.  What  about  infertility?

Kissing  was  also  a  way  of  breaking  "purity"  along  with  dating.  I'm  surprised  she  didn't  at  least  spin  the  bottle  at  twelve  or  so.  Really  this  kind  of  purity  gives  me  at  least  a  headache  and  a  desire  to  go  grab  a  hammer  and  just  smash  away.  That  or go  read  Margaret  Atwood.  Really  purity  was  such  a  big  thing  in the  book  and  of  course  Calla  wasn't  a  slut.  Girls  who  fuck  or  dress  sexually  are total  sluts  (this  happened  in  the  book).  Man  this  virgin/slut  shit  is  horrible  and  Andrea  Cremer  gets  away  with  it  with  werewolves.

2.  "Alternate  Lifestyles".  This  is  actually  what  was  said  about  the  relationship  between  the  two  gay  werewolves.  I  have  a  bunch  of  LGBT  friends  and  they  hate  those  two  words.  You  don't  say  that  to  gays,  even  when  you  aren't  a  homophobe.  I  don't  think  Andrea  Cremer  knows  any  LGBT  folks  whatsoever  and  wanted  to  appear  "tolerant".  And  the  gay  werewolves  seriously  could  have  been  a  way  better  storyline  than  this  shit  was  but  teenage  girls  don't  care  about  gays,  they  want  PG-13  steamy  sexual  attraction  that  makes  me  want  to  rip my  hair  out  and  watch  Bent  or  read  Margaret  Atwood  or  Judy  Blume  instead.  And  on  the  gay  thing  again,  I  think  I'll  just  go read  David  Levithan.

3.  Actual  Wolves.  Alpha  females  lead  the  pack,  the  alpha  male  is  just  the  main  brain  but  usually  doesn't  live  long  because  all  the  other  male  wolves  want  to  fuck  alpha  females.  But  Cremer  didn't  bother  with  research,  she  wanted  to  look  like  she cared  about  women.  Ren  would  never  be  the  smartest  wolf  because  as  I  said  before,  he  thinks  through  his  genitals.  And  Calla  really  has  no  power,  she  may  as  well  be  called  the  useless  woman.  She  has  no  power  so  she  shouldn't  be  "Alpha".  And  even  before  Ren  and  Calla  get  married,  Ren  bosses  around  Calla's  pack  and  he  shouldn't  be  able  to  do  that.  And  then  Calla's  pack  stops  listening  to her  which  should  be  wrong,  but  no,  just  no.  Calla  is  useless  when  she  should  be  leading  the  entire  pack.

4.  Come  on,  these  are  Teenagers  for  Crying  Out  Loud.  Today's  teenagers  will  probably  become  as  Stephen  King  said  in  his  short  story  "1922",  sweetheart  bandits  before  they  accept  an  arranged  marriage  without  a  fight.  It  was  even  better  explained  in  Bestest.  Ramadan.  Ever.  (great  book,  by  the  way)  because  the  heroine,  Almira,  wanted  a  boyfriend  super  bad  even  though  she  was  a  Muslim  and  her  parents  won't  let  her  date  due  to  her  religion.  Hell,  even  Dimple  Lala  potrayed  it  better  in  Born  Confused.  But  Cremer  seems  too  crazy,  far-off.  

5.  The  Characters.  I  could  barely  remember  their  names,  much  less  anything  about  them.  Really  all  I  remembered  about  those  gay  werewolves  was  that  they  were  gay,  nothing  great  like  maybe  they  play  with  their  mashed  potatoes,  or  they  like  to  listen  to  old  time  jazz. Nothing  memorable  other  than  their  sexuality  (gays  are  more  than  just,  I  don't  know,  gay).      

6.  Sexual  Harassment.  Calla  is sexually  harassed  by  male  wolves  higher  ranking  than  her.  It  made  me  sad,  but  I  know  it  happens.
Fuck.  Calla  showed  no  signs  that  sexually  abused  people  do  and  she  promptly  forgot  all  about  it  (just  like  everything  else,  she's  a  total  airhead  and  all  it  takes  is  a  kiss  for  her  to  lose  all  her  thoughts.  I  could  shake  her  up  like  an  Etcha  Sketch.).  She  showed  no  stress;  it  was  the  exact  opposite  of  all  the  stress  that  goes  through  people  because  of  it.  If  a  man forcibly  gropes  you  it's  not  something  you  can  just  forget  without  stress.  People  may  feel  violent  or  blame  themselves,  but  Calla  has  it  just  blow  out  of  her  head.  Mrs.  Cremer  clearly  knows  no  one  who  has  gone  through  this  and  it  was  falsely  represented. 

I  find  this  book  offensive  to  women  (and  men  because  if  someone  forcibly  gropes  you  I  just can't  see  that  blowing  out  of  a  man's  head)  everywhere  who  have  to  go  through  that  shit.  In  her  world  change  just  doesn't  happen  at  all,  the  makers  of  the  law  either  weren't  female  or  gay  because  they're  anti-female  and  anti-gay,  and  of  course  she's  fine  with  it.  Calla  is  nothing  more  than  a  sex  object.  I  can  prove  it  with  the  cover  of  the  next  book:

That  is  not  innocent  teenage  sexuality,  that  looks  like  the  cover  of  a  porno.  Here's  innocent  teenage  sexuality:

For  all  you  know  the  guy  and  girl  could  be  leafing  through  a  magazine  on  that  bed. The  book  may  be about  sex  and  the  cover  may  be  a  little  "racy",  but  the cover  isn't  all  about  sex.

Still  innocent.  For  all  you  know  a  person  could have  just  woken  up  and  didn't  make  their  bed.  The  cover  may  allude  to  sex  but  it  really  may  not be  about  sex.  Yes  the  book  itself  is  about  sex  but  the  cover  isn't  really  about  sex  because  it  could  just  be  about  a  person  who  doesn't  make  their  bed.  This  is  innocent  sexuality  without  all  the  gross  details.

Cremer  glorified  the  purity  myth,  that  you  should  blame  yourself  for  sexual  harassment,  love  is  an  instant  thing,  being  gay  is  an  "alternative  lifestyle",  wolves  aren't  actually  led  by  females,  and  women  are  sex  objects.  Great  read,  Mrs.  Cremer  (excuse  me  while  I  go  read  Judy  Blume  for  a  long,  long  time)!

XVI by Julia Karr Review

This  book  took  me  so  long  to  read,  it  was  that  painful.  It  confused  me  at  times  and  at  others  I  just  wanted  to  scream.  Long  story  short:  I  DID  NOT  like  this  book.

So,  let's  begin  this  review.

The  world  building  was  awful  and  had  no  explanation  whatsoever  on  anything.  Here's  examples:

1.  You  call  cars  "trannies"?  Every  time  I  read  that  I  continued  to  think  of  transgenders,  which  of  course  the  book  has  none.  It  never  told  why  that  happened  or  how  a  word  associated  with  people  who  are  the  opposite  gender  born  in  the  wrong  body  became  cars,  so  like  other  viewers  pointed  out  on  Goodreads  and  Amazon  (many  of  them  also  thinking  of  transgenders  and  transsexuals  during  this)  considered  useless.  Books  have  parts  that  can  tick  me  off,  that  definitely  did.

2.  Everyone's  vegetarian?  I  guess  the  author  is  one  and  decided  everyone  in  this  world  should  be,  too.  There  was  no  explanation  at  how  this  happened  and  made  the  times  when  everyone  ate  have  that  stick  in  my  head.  There  has  to  be  good  reasoning  for  it,  but  there  is  none.  And  yet  they  still  breed  animals?  Do  they  keep  them  under  constant  guidance  so  they  don't  breed  too  much  because  without  eating  them  they  just  stand  around  in  zoos,  clearly  they  have  to  make  sure  they  don't  take  up  too  much  space.

3.  The  Reproductive  Rights  of  Women.  This  was  mentioned  in  the  book  and  I  found  it  hard  to  believe.  This  society  seems  like  the  last  place  where  women  would  be  shooting  out  babies,  you'd  think  this  society  mastered  birth  control!  But  no,  girls  have  constant  sex  but  they  still  get  pregnant  because  of  it.  Wow.

4.  The  Tattoo.  The  tattoo  seemed  useless,  why  bother  with  it  because  I'm  sure  forty  year  old  men  had  sex  with  their  six  year  old  daughter,  anyway. 

5.  Slut  Shaming.  All  that  ever  happened  was  Sandy  got  slut  shamed,  by  her  clothes,  by  the  way  she  acted,  just  for  having  a  freaking  sexuality!  I  know  women  have  strong  sexual  desires  like  men,  forget  the  good  girl  crap!  She's  also  super  stupid,  a  total  stereotype!  Sandy  is  treated  like  dirt,  by  people  who  apparently  don't  have  sex  and  therefore  are  above  them.  Thank  you  Julia  Karr,  you  can  go  back  to  your  abstinence  only  education  class!  It's  the  only  class  I  seem  to  fail  in  (I've  been  in  one  before  and  it's  like  birth  control  doesn't  even  exist,  needless  to  say  I  plan  on  finding  some  way  out  of  it  this  year.  If  I  don't  I'm  actually  tempted  to  buy  a  pleasure  pack  from  the  gas  station  just  so  I  can  break  the  teacher  into  at  least  acknowledging  it).  And  of  course  the  stereotype  of  teens  take  control  of  their  sexuality  and  then  someone  dies  (Sarah  Dessen's  Someone  Like  You  ring  a  bell?)!  In  this  case,  she  dies.  Wow.

6.  How  Did  This Happen?  It  wasn't  explained  at  all  other  than  there  was some  treaty,  which  still  had  no  explanation.  Really?  People  live  on  Venus  for  crying  out  loud  and  it  wasn't  explained  at  all!  I  mean  that  would  have  to  some  serious  changes  for  humans  to  even  be  able  to  reach  the  surface!  Can  you  take  a  science  lesson?  Why  aren't  there  more  outspoken  Christians  because  there  are  a  few  churches  left,  and  I  may  be an  Atheist  but  I  have  some  of  Jesus  Freaks  and  there  were  people  against  the  Nazis,  the  Romans,  and  the  Soviet  Union,  clearly  there  would  be  a  bunch  of  JF's  there.  So  do  I  find  this  realistic?  With  no  explanation,  then  no,  I  don't.

7.  George  Orwell.  I  was  sick  at  the  constant 1984  references.  1984  was  a  great  book,  and  it  was  anti-sex  (Brave  New  World  however  was  far  more  believable).  This  place  had  a  bunch  of  dead  zones  (gee,  wouldn't  the  government  worry  about  that?)  but  in  Orwell's  even  the  Proles  land  was  dangerous.  And  wouldn't  you  think  she  wold  have  mentioned  Brave  New  World  of  all  books?  The  promiscuity  (although  women  were  much  better  treated  in  Huxley's  and  far  more  believable),  the  tight  cast  system,  but  I'm  sure  Karr's  never  even  read  a  single  work  by  Huxley!  I  have  no  more  to  say  on  this.

8.  GLBT.  So  are  there  any  gays  or  lesbians?  I  expect  to  see  rent  boys  running  around  because  gays  won't  fall off  the  earth.  I  could  easily  believe  those  government  leaders  had  sex  with  men,  too.  And  trans?  No,  they're  just  cars.

9.  AVEN.  I  could  understand  more  if  Nina  were  asexual,  but  no  she's  a  heterosexual  but  won't  have  sex,  which  can  be  fine,  but  in  the  end,  no.  There  aren't  any  asexuals  in  this  book,  either.  No  gays,  lesbians,  transgenders  and  transsexuals,  hey  probably  even  transvestites  for  crying  out  loud,  asexuals, or  dodo  birds. 

I  don't  consider  this  a  feminist  work.  The  men  are  sex  monsters,  the  women  are  too  dang  submissive,  and  it  reminds  me  too  much  of  Christian  stereotypes.  I  didn't  like  this  at  all,  and  it  felt  like  it  wa s written  for  a  church.

I  give  this  one  tiny  little  star.  I  hated  this  book  and  I  won't  bother  with  the  sequel.

Read  instead:

Brave  New  World  by  Aldous  Huxley

1984  by  George  Orwell

Heck,  may  as  well  go  read  Naomi  Wolf  for  crying  out  loud!
