I was planning on reading his novel, Give A Boy A Gun, about a school shooting. I only made it to the Author's Note. It reads:
I was planning on reading his novel, Give A Boy A Gun, about a school shooting. I only made it to the Author's Note. It reads:
"One of the things I used to like about writing books for young people was that it wasn't necessary to deal with murder, adultery, and various other immoral or criminal activities that seem mandatory in adult novels these days. I find it sad and frightening that this is no longer the case.
"One of the things I dislike most about guns in our society is that, like violence and sex in the media, they rob children of what we used to think of as a childhood."
There was another sentence after it about blah blah blah, you're about to read a work of fiction that's so real. And here's a "bright" thing he wrote for the acknowledgements:
". . . we live in a country where gun use and gun availability is horribly, insanely out of control."
I am a die hard liberal, but I believe everyone has the right to a firearm if they want one.
What am I trying to say from this? Well, it's that Todd Strassar is an idiot, missing the point.

Thank you to Bay of Fundie for the image. |
It is not the fucking gun that is the problem, it is the stress the shooter has because of bullying, home problems, and other issues of that person. Story time:
My dad owns two safes full of guns. I know how to shoot a gun, why? So I can get me some venison (yummy)! I also do archery. If I asked my dad to let me borrow one of his guns, he'd probably give it to me. What would I most likely do with it? I would shoot clay pigeons.
Also, at my school we have messenger bags we buy at the office for $10 (I know, so damn expensive) and it's the only messenger bag we can carry around. Why? Everyone's so afraid of kids bringing guns to school I can't carry my backpack around. But guess what? It's large enough for me to stick a gun inside! Does that mean I'm going to start a school shooting? Hell no!
But you say this: "If minors weren't allowed to own guns, does that mean school shootings would almost completely stop?"
No. If we took away guns, they'd probably just beat the living shit out of someone. Does that mean we take away their fists so there's no punching? Do we take away their legs and feet so there is no kicking? Do we take away the male's groin so they can't be beaned between the knees? And can't almost anything be used as a weapon? I could poke out your eye with an aglet (the end of a shoelace, the tip). Does that mean shoes with laces should be banned?
What is the reason kids and teens start school shootings? Their problems and their stress. They may be constantly bullied, abused, neglected, ignored both at home and school, teachers won't help, etc. It is the teenagers problems that need help, not the gun. If we take away the guns then we won't be helping the kids and teens. If people were to help them, they most likely wouldn't be bringing a gun to school and raising hell. A gun has no feelings, no problems with their life, no family, no friends, nothing that we humans face. If we were to help teens cope with and resolve their problems, we'd be helping them. The gun does not do the shooting, the person does.
So, I have guns of my own. I have problems. I am a teen. Does that math problem add up to a school shooting? Not always. If more teens get help, the answer will be that they most likely the gun will be used for protection or sport. Some teens also do need to have access to guns, they may live in a bad neighborhood or something along those lines. If we took their guns away it could mean they might not be protected. They could get hurt, possibly die. Ending gun violence is important, but sometimes having a gun can help stop it. Please educators and mentors of teens and kids, help them with their problems. You could stop school violence with that.
Now, back to Strassar's first message.
"One of the things I used to like about writing books for young people was that it wasn't necessary to deal with murder, adultery, and various other immoral or criminal activities that seem mandatory in adult novels these days."
So, you think that a lot of teens don't have their friends or family get murdered? It happens more than we think. You think their parents don't divorce because one cheated on them? That's one of the top reasons for divorce. And guess what? They aren't mandatory in adult novels. I have heard of very clean adult fiction that isn't religious. But why do adult novels deal with that? Because it happens. Sorry to tell you, but writing realistic fiction should resemble life, not happy-utopia land. We have problems in life. If you think you can back off real life issues just because you know people who read it will most likely be under 18, you might need a reality check. Here's an example:
In Needful Things by Stephen King, Nettie Cobb killed her husband because he abused her. So one night she took a meat knife and stuck it in his throat. That happens. Sure there was some wild stuff in that novel, but Stephen King still always keeps it real. It's an adult novel, yes, but what about Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume? The girl's father gets murdered in that one, and it's for teens. It's realistic fiction. I'm not saying all realistic fiction is like that, some of the clean adult novels I've heard of are also very fluffy chick-lit, but still realistic. I sometimes sit down and read fluffy young adult books (mostly chick-lit, I can't help but love it), but it still resembles real life in some cases. Even if they do have crazy plots like the ever so fluffy All American Girl (loved it) by Meg Cabot, the feelings and reactions of the people in the book are all too real.
"I find it sad and frightening that this is no longer the case."
It has always been the case. Reality check, kids parents, their friends, even the kids themselves have been murdered, raped, beaten, and gone through other traumatic times since basically forever. Life is not happiness land where everyone's all happy and life is just a-OK.
"One of the things I dislike most about guns in our society is that, like violence and sex in the media, they rob children of what we used to think of as a childhood."
"It seems today
that all you see
is violence in movies
and sex on TV.
But where are those good old fashioned values?
On which we used to rely.
Lucky there's a Family Guy!"
-Family Guy theme song
It's just plain sad when I can reply the Family Guy theme song on this guy. It's a whole new level of failure.
Teens and kids experience violence, from their parents, friends, family, their dating partner, anyone. If you think the media made some of the more realistic stuff up than you live under a nice and cozy rock. And what if the teens consent to sex? Proper consent? With protection? And good sex education, perhaps? And they truly want to have sex with that person? Is it bad? Do you truly call it bad? It should be a great thing (unless there parents are conservative, then they might get in trouble, which is just sad). Why do make teens feel bad for having an orgasm? Why do shame them (mainly girls) for doing it? Can you just not accept change? Are you still living in the 50's? I'm sorry to tell you, the 50's is pretty much over. I went to Stake N' Shake last night and they were playing The Beatles, that restaurant is in it for the 60's! I don't know why everyone wants to move back to when people with polio were put in iron lungs (or when there was polio). If the teen or kid was raped, that's a whole different story.
No one can have the "ideal childhood". It's impossible. Why? Because everyone has problems! That means they never get to live in a Dick and Jane book. Sorry Todd, but it's true. If a teen consents to sex, they lose their imaginary virginity, and they just had sex. It doesn't mean they have to go get a job and feed a family of four. They didn't age a few years, they are still minors.
So there you go. Here are my last words on this:
-Guns do not cause school shootings, teenagers and kids problems do. Help the kids and teenagers with their problems.
-Bad things happen to people. That's our reality. Violence is real.
-Teens have sex. If they consent with protection, proper sex education, and want to have sex with their partner, it's good.
-If you want a good school shooting novel for teens that deals with murder, teenage problems, and the oh so evil adultery, read Hate List by Jennifer Brown. It's actually realistic.
Now excuse me while Tiller, Obama, Gloria Steinem, and I go skipping through liberal land while we throw condoms at people and wear pro-choice t-shirts with rainbow socks supporting gay marriage.
