The Cover of My Very Own Copy |
Does Jeff Hirsch think his readers are idiots? I hope he doesn't, but it sure as hell seems like it. What he wrote has so many plot holes it's like a burial site. Examples:
America apparently bombed North Korea.
What is this, Idiot Con? No one bombs North Korea in fear of their nukes. They try to either have nothing to do with them or be their allies. North Korea is an ally of China. Apparently America bombed China and it's allies in the book, Hirsch not stating which allies. So I was lead to believe America bombed North Korea. Wow, that is just sad.
Apparently Once You Touch The Virus, You Die.
What the hell, you touch a doorknob with the eleventh plague's virus on it and you're basically instantly dead? That's not how a fucking virus works, it goes into your body, invades a cell, waits for a period of time (some periods short, some long) reproducing, bursts open the cell and continues constantly reproducing viruses, making people suffer. Touching a virus instantly does not kill you, however it can enter the body. That's why people are careful not to touch blood because they may get HIV and other STD (and regular, non sexually transmitted) viruses into their body. If they touch blood and say they get an HIV virus, touching the virus itself won't kill them, the virus killing white blood cells will kill them.
The Government Just Stopped
Did someone shoot the president? Did China have our government killed? Did they escape to other countries like royals in Europe did when Hitler invaded them in WWII? How in the hell did the government collapse?
It Was Described that LOTS of People Died From the Plague
It sounded like other countries were bombed, perhaps America's allies like Great Britain. I can understand that, but it sounded like SO many countries were bombed. It was like they bombed Norway, a neutral country. China wouldn't waste nukes on Norway unless they have some big problem with them, which they don't and in the book also didn't.
The Red Cross?
Wouldn't America get some help from other countries? We do have allies. Is the Chinese preventing them? It was never explained.
Google Earth
Unless the satellites shut down, the Chinese could use military satellites to find camps of people like Settler's Landing. Their secret nook would be gone.
The Supplies
The supplies sounded endless, which they aren't.
Do They Have Enough Food?
Unless Settler's Landing had absolutely enough food, including excess, there would be no no school. That's how all ancient societies worked, once you have a definite food crop can you settle in one place and start having other jobs than farming. I was never for sure about Settler's Landing.
Global Warming
It said we were losing oil when the Collapse happened, so have the icecaps melted? Where are all the hurricanes and such that happens because of global warming? It's such a large, gaping plot hole you could fall through it.
Slavers?
I wasn't always sure what they did. They mentioned stuff like mercenaries and plantations. They were never explained, so I went like this: "What?"
It Could Have Been A Different Country
I can see a war happening over backpackers mistaken as spies, but I'm sure there would first be a meeting between the American and Chinese government. Plus, wouldn't the backpackers have known where and where not to go? When I first got the book do you know what I thought the war would have been over? I thought it would have been over Chinese manufacturing American products. This is never even mentioned in the book, but I can see us fighting over our debt to China before backpackers. Like I said, the Chinese making our stuff was too touchy for Jeff Hirsch. This could have happened in a different country, we aren't allies with everyone. It could have been North Korea (the backpackers would've snuck in to get there) and that definitely would've been hell. China would have fought with North Korea most likely. I think Hirsch just thought to put China in because it's China.
Pregnancy
Steve's grandfather was mad at Steve's mom for giving birth to Steve's sister (which killed her and her child). What the hell? Do you expect there to be abortion clinics in that hellish landscape? And an illegal abortion would most likely be fatal, knitting needles and clothes hangers are always evil.
Animals?
They may not have gotten sick with the plague, but wouldn't the bombing have also effected them?
America Bombed It's Own Cities
It's currently illegal for America to do that.
I had trouble believing most of the stuff in this book, like I said, full of holes. However, after that the writing was pretty good, but I only basically knew six characters immediately, Steve, Jenny, Violet, Steve's Dad, Grandfather, and Mom. The others basically just meshed together. I only liked Steve and Jenny, that's pretty much it. The relationship between all the teens were realistic, but I never believed Steve and Jenny were in love. I could see them as friends (with benefits), but I could never imagine them as in love. It was so insta-love, too.
2 stars, but it was great I got this for only $9 rather than the normal $18. :)
So yeah, I only liked the non plot holed parts, which were few. And the book does get boring, the action only comes at the end. I know other ;people will like it more than I do, though. So read if you wish.
Ah, to make myself feel better after reading this I'm reading Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood. She'll make everything better.
